What's Next?

It's almost the end of March and I haven't run a race this year. As a matter of fact, I haven't run a step this year after my MRI in December revealed that my knee was messed up enough that I might need surgery. I got the surgery on February 12th and I've been on crutches since. I have had 12 sessions of physical therapy and my last one was today for the time being. I go back to the doctor on April 4th and hopefully will be done with crutches. Then? Who knows? My physical therapist said the doctor will probably send me back for more PT after I get to weight bearing status.

One thing that I know for sure is next is a road trip as soon as I have enough gap between appointments so that I can get in the car and go. I want to drive to Florida to meet my newest grandson Donovan and who knows where I will go or what I will do coming and going. I'm keeping an open agenda. I know I want to get to St. Louis, Georgia and Colorado for sure; other than that the itinerary is open. I just know that I love driving around and seeing this beautiful country. I have also enjoyed catching up with friends when the opportunity presents itself.

Needless to say I've read a bunch of books while I've been restricted. One was, Paradise Road - Jack Kerouac's Lost Highway and My Search for America by Jay Atkinson. An interesting quote was, "There's a bit of Quixote in every domestic traveler, because you have to delude yourself into thinking your journey is important; otherwise, you're just an ant crawling along the maze of America".

One thing that is obviously off the table for this particular trip is finding new races to run. The question is will that be off the table from now on. The doctor and his assistant both said that I should probably not run any longer. I hope that doesn't turn out to be the case but if it does then I know that I have to find an alternative if I can't run. Running has been more important to me than I can even explain the last several years. Oh well, we'll see what the future brings.
